MEET LAURA

ATTITUDE & APPROACH

Hi, I’m Laura Linner, AM, LICSW, the owner, founder, and therapist behind Ellipsis Mental Health.

I believe life and humans can be messy, confusing, amazing, doubtful, inspired, scared, brave, hopeless, hopeful, and many more things all at the same time. I am inspired by people’s willingness and ability to move into discomfort, try new ways of being and make change in ways that feel valuable to them. I believe an individual is not their diagnosis, and I join alongside clients to explore meaning, bringing authenticity, hope, and humor to my work with individuals and families. I consider it an honor to walk alongside others in recognizing, accessing, and developing their own resiliency, and in building a rich, full and meaningful life. I am mindful of creating a non-judgmental, anti-oppressive, anti-racist, LGBTQIA-affirming space for the clients with whom I work.

MY approach

My foundational clinical training is in non-directive Rogerian client-centered therapy from my time as a clinical intern then post-graduate psychotherapy fellow in a group practice in Chicago. This humanistic approach continues to serve as the clinical underpinning of my work with clients. Using an eclectic approach, I also responsibly integrate and draw from a number of therapeutic approaches.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Trauma-informed therapy:
  • EMDR (Level I and II trained)
  • Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Level I trained)
  • Trauma Focused-ACT & Trauma Focused-CBT
  • Narrative Exposure Therapy (formally trained)
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) and parts-work

Polyvagal theory (employing a neurobiological lens to create awareness of nervous system regulation, zones of optimal functioning, neuroplasticity and moving toward meaningful change).

Psychosis specific therapy:
  • CBT for psychosis (CBT-p)
  • ACT for psychosis
  • Navigate Model for treating psychosis (trained both as individual therapist and family clinician)

I have worked in the field of violence recovery services and human rights, both abroad, and in Chicago and Minnesota. Most recently, during my time here in the Twin Cities, I worked as an individual and family clinician for the Navigate First-Episode Psychosis Program with the University of Minnesota’s Department of Psychiatry. During my four years with the Navigate Program I was trained in the Navigate Model and built competency working with individuals and families impacted by psychosis and schizophrenia spectrum diagnoses, which is work I continue to be committed to today. For the past three years I have provided therapy at Birch Counseling, a group practice in Hopkins.

During this time I have deepened my competency with trauma-related diagnoses and have completed formal training in: Narrative Exposure Therapy, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Level I) and EMDR Therapy (Level I and II).

I am also a MN Board of Social Work Approved Clinical Supervisor and very much enjoy supervising LGSW clinicians.
